The national football team, known as the Golden Jaguars, came out top in their second round qualifying group leading towards the 2014 World Cup and so they move on to the third round where they will play Mexico, Costa Rica and El Salvador during 2012

National elections were held on 28 November and the PPP/Civic retained power but lost its overall parliamentary majority. Mr Donald Ramotar has been sworn in as president
